The Realms of Despair is a free-to-play, multi-user dungeon (or a MUD for short). It
can be played from almost any computer that has an internet connection. The game has
been around since 1994. And, thanks to decades of active administrative staff, there
is always something new happening on Realms of Despair.
The Realms of Despair has a medieval/fantasy theme. There is something for every type
of gamer. Players are able to switch between leveling new characters, exploring hundreds
of unique areas, forming groups to run monsters, or engaging in player-killing activities.
It is almost impossible to run out of things to do.

The Order of Arcanes
The Order of Arcanes is a player-run organisation on the Realms of Despair. The Arcanes
has been a feature of the game since around 1995. It is one of the longest-running, and
most prestigious organisations in the game.
Membership within the Order of Arcanes is restricted to magical classes, such as: mages,
clerics, paladins, fathomers, druids, augurers, rangers, vampires, and nephandi. New players are
able to apply to join the Order at level 25. In both of these regards, the Order of
Arcanes is quite unique compared to other orders. Members of the Order are able to
access a secret headquarters, the Sanctum of the Arcanes. The Sanctum contains shops,
repair mobs, private noteboards, and some well-stocked donation rooms.
The Order of Arcanes is heavily focused on mapping, mob-running, and player killing. It
is not a role-playing organisation. In addition, the Order boasts one of the most
experienced leadership teams in the entire game. That experience enables new players
to jump in and learn the game at a much faster rate. And for older players, the Order of
Arcanes is the perfect place to meet with friends, and access the end-game content that
is otherwise hidden away from the average player.
